Health, Visas & Essential Preparation
Health Requirements
A medical checkup is strongly advised, especially for those 40+ or with prior conditions. Diamox (altitude sickness prevention) may be recommended by your doctor. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude climbing and evacuation from Tanzania is essential.
Vaccinations: Yellow Fever certificate required if transiting through affected countries for 12+ hours. Anti-malarial medication is required for Tanzania.
Visa Application
Two options are available: on arrival (allow 1+ hour, cash payment required — US$100 for US citizens) or online in advance via the Tanzania Immigration portal.
Luggage Tips
Pack walking boots in carry-on luggage. Use a soft 55–70 litre duffle bag for porters (no framed bags or suitcases). Store excess luggage at Gran Melia. Keep passport, money, and documents in your daypack at all times.
Tipping Your Mountain Crew
Tipping is not compulsory but warmly appreciated. DKE suggests a total of USD $480–$550 per person for the entire trek: $160 for the Expedition Leader and $320–$390 distributed among the assistant leader, cook, camp crew, and porters via provided envelopes. Hand all envelopes to the Expedition Leader on the final morning.

Proper gear is critical for a safe and comfortable Kilimanjaro climb. The mountain's extreme conditions demand layering systems and waterproof protection throughout.

Maasai Mara
Unbroken skies and sweeping savanna.
Tree-dotted plains roll to the horizon. Wildlife moves in astonishing numbers. In the Masai Mara National Reserve, space stretches as far as the eye can see. But in one corner, tucked beneath the forested Oloololo escarpment, where the Great Rift Valley begins and Out of Africa took its final bow, safari becomes personal. A piece of the Mara, just for you, and your family. Big 5
Our lodge partners are all on private concessions, meaning they directly support the Maasai tribes by leasing the land from them and working closely with the individuals who call this magical place home. Private concessions also means there are respectful restrictions on how many vehicles are in situ or at a wildlife sight. This protects the ecosystem and keeps the wildlife wile.

With us you can expereince the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards 2025, Camps right on the river for ideal migration moments, flycamping, mobile tents that feel like first safaris, luxury stays, and above all else: sustainable properties that are in-tune with their surroundings.

Kichwa Tembo - Contemporary style, classic spirit.
Sprawled along the Saparingo River at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment, where riverine forest meets open plains, Kichwa Tembo is perfectly positioned to witness the Great Migration. Meaning “head of the elephant” in Kiswahili, it sits in the remote western Mara, on land leased from Maasai landlords and explored almost exclusively by our guests. Here, panoramic views and intimate wildlife encounters meet legendary Kenyan warmth, offering a fresh lens on a timeless safari.
